ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS

> US - EQUINE HERPES   New Jersey animal health authorities are investigating a possible outbreak of a neurological type of equine herpes virus type 1. Horses at four farms in New Jersey have been quarantined to prevent the virus from spreading. The investigation of the outbreak started last week after it was reported that a couple of horses at a farm in County of Monmouth had to be euthanized after the results of a test revealed that they had a neurological form of EHV-1. (TopNews)

> SOUTH KOREA - FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE   South Korea reported the discovery of a new outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, less than a month after the nation declared itself free of the disease.  The disease was discovered in cattle at a farm in Ganghwa, 36 miles west of the capital Seoul. The government destroyed about 200 animals at the farm, limited traffic and carried out disinfection around the area. (Business Week)

> CANADA - GM PIGS   Environment Canada has given the go-ahead to Canadian researchers to raise the genetically modified “Enviropig” in a controlled research setting. The genetic modification enables the Enviropig to produce phytase, which breaks down phosphorous, in its salivary glands. As a result, the urine and feces excreted by the Enviropig have just 35% the phosphorous content of waste produced by traditionally bred pigs. (Pig e-news)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT

The newsletter is a short one this week.  Many of you must still be on Easter break!!  Hopefully you'll be back to work next week creating interesting press releases that we can report.

We continue to watch for additional product introductions that will drive new revenue in 2010.  Without new product introductions, we think it will be difficult for revenues in animal health to exceed 2009.

We've recently been encouraged by the number of venture capital firms that are beginning to demonstrate interest in animal health. We need investment to stimulate and support innovation.  For those of you with new technology that needs funding, we want to encourage you to block the date of August 31, 2010 for the Second Animal Health Investment Forum that will be held in Kansas City.  Watch our newsletter and the KCAHC website for application information on this next meeting.

Have a great weekend!!

Ron Brakke
