ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS

> US - FDA GUIDANCE ON ANTIMICROBIAL USE  The FDA issued draft guidance intended to help reduce the development of resistance to medically important antimicrobial drugs used in food-producing animals. The draft guidance summarizes a number of published reports on antimicrobial resistance and states that the overall weight of evidence available to date supports the conclusion that using medically important antimicrobial drugs for production or growth enhancing purposes (i.e., non-therapeutic or subtherapeutic uses) in food-producing animals is not in the interest of protecting and promoting the public health. The document recommends phasing in measures that would limit medically important antimicrobial drugs to uses in food-producing animals that are considered necessary for assuring animal health and that include veterinary oversight or consultation. (FDA)

> US - NAIS FUNDING   The House Appropriations subcommittee that funds USDA and FDA programs announced a fiscal 2011 funding bill that would stop funding USDA's voluntary National Animal Identification System (NAIS). USDA had asked for $14.2 million for the program. (Meating Place)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT

When I was a kid in South Dakota a few years ago we used to measure the probability of the fall corn crop by measuring the height of the corn on the 4th of July.  If it was knee high by the 4th of July, it meant that it was growing properly and would probably have a reasonable crop.  Oh my how things have changed!!  When I left South Dakota in early June this year you could find corn that was already knee high so by now it’s probably at least waist high or more.  Genetics and farming practices have changed the production of both plants and animals.  The agriculture community, with the support of manufacturers of many types, continues to supply safe, quality food to a growing population around the world. We continue to believe that new technology in many forms is one of the most important investments you can make. The annual decline in R&D investment by both large and small companies is being reflected in the lack of new products entering the marketplace.

This week we began participating in the review of the applications by new companies to present at the 2nd Annual Animal Health Investment Forum in Kansas City. We’re encouraged that we had over 30 applications which the review board will need to cull down to 20 to 24 presenting companies.  There are some very promising technologies in this group of new companies.  Now we need investors with the same quality of vision to assist in bringing these innovations to the marketplace.

Have a great 4th of July weekend!!
