ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS

> RINDERPEST   The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) declared that rinderpest has officially been eradicated.  The last known case of the disease was identified in Africa in 2001 - the same year of the last vaccinations. Rinderpest holds a special place in veterinary history because outbreaks of rinderpest in European cattle herds are said to have been the driver for the establishment of the first veterinary school at Lyon in France in 1761. (Farm Weekly - Australia)

> US - SWINE BRUCELLOSIS  The USDA notified the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) that the state of Texas had been declared free of swine brucellosis. Texas is the last state to be officially declared free of this disease by the USDA. (The Cherokeean)

> US - ANTIBIOTIC USE   The Natural Resources Defense Council filed a lawsuit against the FDA claiming that FDA has not adequately addressed the use of antibiotics in animal production. The suit, filed by NRDC, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Food Animal Concerns Trust, Public Citizen, and Union of Concerned Scientists, alleges that there is “growing evidence that the spread of bacteria immune to antibiotics around the world has clear links to the overuse of antibiotics in the food industry,” according to a news release issued by NRDC.  (Pork Network)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT

As we move into the long Memorial Day weekend here in the US, we find more to be concerned about than to be optimistic at this time.  Having just driven from Dallas to the Central US, I found extreme variations in the quality of the cereal grain plantings and conditions.  In some cases I observed severe drought that has impacted the quality and quantity of the wheat crop; then 50 miles further down the road many fields had not been planted or new plantings had been drowned out because of too much moisture.  The future USDA reports on the anticipated corn and wheat crop for 2011 will be interesting. These reports will clearly have an impact on the cost to feed livestock and poultry for the balance of the year.

In the companion animal area, many companies are watching closely the entry of the generic fipronil products in the OTC market. Will these introductions be game changers for the veterinary dispensing business in 2011?  How will that impact other products that the veterinarian dispenses to pet owners?

In spite of these negatives, we’ve been impressed with the positive revenue numbers most companies are reporting. If the first quarter trend continues we’ll have a record year in animal health in 2011.

Will some of you please provide me with your thoughts on what is happening in the marketplace?  I have all weekend to read your thoughts and opinions. You can reply to the newsletter to send me your comments.

Have a great weekend and play safely!!

Ron Brakke
