ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS

> US - ANTIBIOTIC USE   The FDA issued an order that prohibits extra-label uses of the cephalosporin class of antimicrobial drugs in cattle, swine, chickens and turkeys effective April 5, 2012. In  2008, FDA issued and then revoked an order that prohibited extra-label uses of cephalosporins in food-producing animals with no exceptions. This announcement responds to public comment and includes the following exceptions, which protect public health while considering animal health needs: (1) The order does not limit the use of cephapirin; (2) Veterinarians will still be able to use or prescribe cephalosporins for limited extra-label use in cattle, swine, chickens or turkeys as long as they follow the dose, frequency, duration, and route of administration that is on the label; (3) Veterinarians may also use or prescribe cephalosporins for extra-label uses in minor species of food-producing animals such as ducks or rabbits. (FDA)

> PARAGUAY - FMD  Paraguay has declared a state of emergency in a northern province to deal with an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. The outbreak follows an outbreak in September in the same department that led to the destruction of 1,000 head of cattle and $300 million ($A290 million) in losses. Paraguayan authorities ordered the destruction of 150 cattle found to have the disease at a ranch about 18 miles (30km) from the ranch where the first outbreak was detected in the northern department of San Pedro. 2012 PET OWNER CHANNEL USE STUDY
NOW AVAILABLE

A new study of pet owner buying behavior is now available.  The Pet Owner Channel Use Study, produced by Brakke Consulting and The Pert Group, is a national survey of 1,200 dog and cat owners that examines purchase frequency by type of outlet for seven major categories of products.  It explores channel switching, and the importance of convenience, price and veterinary recommendations on buying decisions.

This 200-page report shows significant shifts in channel preference, veterinarian influence and professional channel vulnerabilities compared to a similar study four years ago.  A special feature of this new report compares differences in behaviors between pet owners who regularly visit the vet and those that don’t.

The new Pet Owner Channel Use Study is now available at a cost of $12,500. For information, contact John Volk at jvolk@brakkeconsulting.com

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT

We hope all of you are off to a great start for the New Year.  The first few months always bring a great deal of activity related to new product introductions, organizational changes, and major trade shows. On top of that many companies use the first part of the year as a time to hold management meetings to create new enthusiasm and strategies for the coming months. We wish all of you the best in the New Year!!

In the midst of your activities, you may be trying to determine the answers to some industry questions such as: Have pet owners changed their buying habits in the past 18 months? What product categories were winners in 2011, and what are likely to be winners in 2012?  Will industry consolidation continue in 2012?  and What does the future look like in the companion and food animal sectors in the coming years?  We plan to provide our perspective and thoughts on many industry questions at our Annual Industry Overviews at the NAVC and WVC.  We hope to see you there.  There is still limited space available at each presentation so register NOW.

Have a great weekend!!

Ron Brakke
