ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS

> US - PRION RESEARCH  New research from the National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wisconsin has found that prions that cause chronic wasting disease in deer can be taken up by plants such as alfalfa, corn and tomatoes. The research further demonstrated that stems and leaves from tainted plants were infectious when injected into laboratory mice. The findings are significant because they reveal a previously unknown potential route of exposure to prions, which cause a variety of diseases including bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT

We have now completed the first nine months of the year and look forward to the third quarter reports. Early indications are that the third quarter from the revenue side was a challenging as the first 6 months.

It has been an interesting year with fierce competition for market shares occurring in some of the leading categories that are not experiencing unit growth. We see more of the same in the fourth quarter and believe that a number companies will be pleased to have 2013 behind them so they can start with some new approaches and products in the new year. We noted in the newsletter that there is another new flea product entering the market this fall; it seems like we have one of these every week.

Have a great weekend!

Ron Brakke
