BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT

This is a great time to be in the livestock business – if you have livestock and can keep them healthy. Prices for beef, pork and milk are at or near all-time highs. Export markets are strong. Animal numbers are down for beef and hogs, and headed lower. The drought forced many producers in the Southwest and West to liquidate herds. PEDV – Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus – is raging through the North American swine herd as referenced in one of the articles above. (No doubt many companies are racing to develop a vaccine.) The good news for animal health companies is that producers are flush with cash. The bad news is that there are a lot fewer animals to be treated.

Also in this newsletter we announced the first online presentation of our popular Animal Health Industry Overview on April 16. It will be interactive – you’ll be able to ask questions following the presentation. If you were not able to attend the annual presentations at NAVC or WVC, this is a great opportunity. Register today; there are still good seats available. ;-)
