ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS

> US - ANTIBIOTIC BANS  California is considering a bill that would ban the use of over-the-counter antibiotics in livestock and poultry. The bill, SB 27, would allow antibiotics to still be used if they are administered under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian and involved a prescription. The proposed legislation would also make it unlawful to use a medically important antibiotic to promote growth or to improve feed efficiency. The antibiotics could only be used to prevent, control or treat animal diseases. The bill, if passed into law, would make California the first state in the union to have a law banning use of such antibiotics in agriculture. (WattAgNet)

> US - VESICULAR STOMATITIS  Horses in two Colorado counties have tested positive for vesicular stomatitis (VS) and have been placed under quarantine. Colorado has become the fourth state in the country to have confirmed equine VS cases in 2015; previous positive cases have been diagnosed in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. (Vet Advantage)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT

The news this week covers several international out-licensing and acquisition transactions. It is becoming increasingly important that companies have an international presence to generate revenue to assist in covering the ever-increasing costs of research and development. We find it interesting that several of these announced transactions involved product areas such as genetics, natural nutritionals and diagnostics to improve productivity in food animal and improve health in companion animals. We believe these trends will continue at even a faster pace in the next few years.

Current consumer attitudes on antibiotic- and hormone-free food continues to drive branded food companies towards promotional activities that are fueling these non-scientific based consumer perceptions. The industry needs to continue to try to counter this trend with educational programs that reach consumers as well as retailing and food companies. It will not be easy!

Earlier in the newsletter you hopefully noted our new U.S. Livestock Insecticide Market study. While the food animal insecticide product area is not a large market, it is still an important product segment that is crucial to the production of protein and the health of the animals. No matter how hard the industry tries, insects seem to maintain the upper hand if they are not kept under reasonable control. We believe you will find the information in this new report useful.

Have a great weekend!

Ron Brakke
