> Elanco announced that the USDA has issued the Veterinary Biological License for Viralign 6, the first combination modified-live virus (MLV) vaccine to provide targeted protection against bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) virus 1b, the most predominant BVD virus strain in the US. Viralign 6 also provides protection against BVD viral strains 1a and 2, bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus and parainfluenza3 (PI3) virus. > Vedco, Inc. announced it has entered into a supply agreement with Kinn, Inc. Kinn’s products offer a client-friendly way to administer solid-dose medications to pets. (company press release)
> Eco Animal Health announced the placement of shares with institutional investors has raised GBP 12 million ($19.4 million) gross before fees and expenses. The financing will enable it to build up a strategic stockholding and manage working capital for recently entered markets. (Animal Pharm)

> CHINA Ceva announced a synergistic collaboration with partner Jinyu Baoling following the signature of a technical and trademark license to produce international standard brucellosis vaccines in China. > MEXICO H.J. Baker & Bro. Inc. announced that it has established a sales office in Guadalajara, Mexico, to meet growing demand throughout Latin America. ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
> US – ANTIBIOTIC USE The FDA issued new rules for the use of the cephalosporin class of antimicrobial drugs in food animals, which will take effect on April 5 following a comment period. As currently worded, the rules should have relatively minor impact on how beef producers and their veterinarians use these drugs in cattle. (CattleNetwork.com)
> US – VACCINE REGULATION Furloughed employees of the UDSA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s (APHIS) Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB) responsible for the verification and release of animal vaccines returned to work this week. More than a week into the government shutdown that shuttered the doors of all “non-essential” federal offices, these CVB employees were “excepted” from furlough in order to maintain public health. The CVB is solely responsible for verifying animal vaccines and releasing them into the marketplace. (DVM360)

This week’s news covers some important new product approvals, distribution agreements and financing for several companies. Even in the face of the US government shutdown the animal health industry continues to move forward. Animals need to be fed and kept healthy while the political theatre continues in Washington. Hopefully, we are approaching a resolution before the whole economy is impacted negatively.
Earlier this week, we completed a mailing to many of you regarding a new animal health history book that we are proposing to produce in 2014. We have been encouraged by a number of executives to consider writing “The U. S. Animal Health Industry, Volume ll.” The book would cover the last 15 years of industry activities and would recognize the current animal health management teams that are making history every day. We and others believe it is important to document the tremendous achievements of the industry these past 15 years.
